From SAM + PROS + A, where PROS stands for Prosodic Transcription, and SAM and A were added for similarity to SAMPA.

- ASCII-based representation of the International Phonetic Alphabet that includes symbols for toneage, length, stress, and pause.

- Unfortunately, silence is not considered a phone, and within ASR no standard exists for its representation. To account for silences within a phone decoding we have chosen to employ the SAMPROSA (Speech Assessment Methods Prosodic Approach) suggestion of ‘. . .’ to represent silence.
