From Proto-Norse ᛊᛏᚨᛁᚾᚨᚹᚨᚱᛁᛃᚨᛉ (stainawarijaʀ), consisting of ᛊᛏᚨᛁᚾᚨᛉ (stainaʀ, stone) and Proto-Norse *ᚹᚨᚱᛃᚨᛉ (*warjaʀ, defender). In some cases, the second part of Steinarr might stem from *ᚺᚨᚱᛃᚨᛉ (*harjaʀ, warrior), being equivalent to Old High German Steinheri.
