From Proto-Norse ᛊᛏᚨᛁᚾᚨᚹᚨᚱᛁᛃᚨᛉ (stainawarijaz), consisting of ᛊᛏᚨᛁᚾᚨᛉ (stainaz, stone) and a form related to Proto-Germanic *warjaz (defender). In some cases, the second part of Steinarr might stem from another root, and would be cognate to Old High German Steinheri.
