Ultimatey from Old Czech stehlec, derived from Proto-Slavic *ščegъlъ. Cognate with modern Czech stehlík, Slovak stehlík, Polish szczygieł, Ukrainian щи́голь (ščýholʹ), Russian щего́л (ščegól), all referring to the same bird. Compare German Stieglitz.
