Etymology

There are two theories regarding the origin of this place name. The first is that it originates from a Tavastian and Eastern Finnish dialectal word sysmä (“deep, remote forest”). The second proposes that it is a contraction from a name like *Sysimäki (sysi + mäki).[1]
