     A short ride down the hill by bus is the fishing village of Tai O, once the source of most of the colony's salt, now surrounded by abandoned salt pans through which white herons carefully pick their way. With its houses on stilts over the numerous narrow creeks running through the town, Tai O seems untouched by Hong Kong's frenzied commercialism.
