Etymology of „жупан“

In the Serbo-Croatian section it says "From Proto-Slavic *županъ."

That cannot be, however. The ž/ж sound in slavic languages traces its origin to the First Slavic Palatalization. [1]

As u/у is a back vowel, it could not have caused said sound change.

The first syllable could have been žju/жю which would make sense in a diachronic fashion, also because ju/ю would sometimes change to u/у after č/ч, ž/ж, š/ш and ć/ћ. Ѻгн҄еметꙑн҄и/Ogňemetyňi (talk) 19:05, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
