The difference between a "glove" and a "mitten" is that — broadly speaking — a "glove" has separate parts for each finger, whereas a "mitten" has a single part for the four non-thumb fingers. For example, I grew up in the w:Lower Peninsula of Michigan, which is shaped like a "mitten", but not like a "glove":
