Southern origin?

edit

Is there an implication that Nanguo (the guy who pretended to play the yu in the "lan yu chong shu" story was from southern China, as stated at Wikipedia? 71.66.97.228 05:33, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

See the first note in the etymology section of 滥竽充数. Hopefully, that will clarify things for you. -- A-cai 01:14, 7 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you; that is clear now. I guess that was so far in the past there is no way to know conclusively. "The south" at that time might have referred to the Jiangnan area, correct--not Fujian or Guangdong, which were sinicized much later? It's interesting, though, because I believe the "yu" mouth organ came to the Yellow River civilization from somewhere in southern China, perhaps around Yunnan, Guizhou, or Guangxi (since the similar "lusheng" remain popular as a folk instrument among the Miao, Dong, and other ethnic groups of these provinces). 71.66.97.228 01:19, 7 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
