@The dog2 Do you have a source for this? I'm having trouble finding evidence of this. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 02:16, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung: It shows up in several Singlish dictionaries like this one: [1], [2], [3], [4]. Some say it's from Hokkien, and some say it's from Teochew, but based on my understanding of both dialects, I think Teochew is the more likely origin. Malaysian singer Namewee (who is from Johor) also mentions it as a Malaysian Hokkien idiom here: [5]. Though to my knowledge, using the term 便 to mean "cheap" is a uniquely Singaporean thing and an influence from Teochew, while in China, 俗 is the standard Hokkien word for "cheap" and in Penang, they use 便宜, which is probably an influence from Hainanese. @The dog2: Okay, thanks. I don't know if it's used in Mainland Teochew, so we can leave the label as is for now. (便宜 in Penang probably isn't from Hainanese. It's just a general Chinese term that's used elsewhere in the Hokkien-speaking world.) — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 03:08, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
