Etymology - is the current version correct?

My copy of Read Japanese Today by Len Walsh (p. 123) claims that the character depicts a flame below earth. I'm not an expert but the upper part of the character look like the character 'earth' to me. Does anyone have any comment? cheers Double Happiness 17:05, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Also "pink"?
