Cerone (surname)

edit

The earlier (and dialectal) form Cirone could indicate derivation from the given name Ruggiero > Girone > Cirone or given name Ciro representing the Persian name Cyrus.  In standard Italian, cerone means “taper” so this could also be a metaphor for an exceptionally thin person. There are several place names in Italy Cerrone, probably from It.cerro, a type of oak tree, but then the reduction of the double -rr- to single -r- remains unexplained. Cerone is also the Italian name of Hiero, the Greek tyrant who destroyed the Sicilian city of Siracusa in 570 BC but this seems somewhat far-fetched. 107.209.53.155 01:33, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
