Western German, especially Lower Rhenish, Jupp is a pet form of "Joseph". So I suspect that Dutch "Joop" goes back to that name as well. The final -p is not really an argument against it, because there's also southern German Sepp, which cannot have been influenced by "Jacob". Probably the name was formerly pronounced differently. Compare also Italian Giuseppe, Catalan Josep. Of course, this is just conjecture. Does anybody have a source for the origin of the Dutch? Thank you. 84.57.154.100 17:38, 26 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
