only for sons?

while it's rare in Western culture to name a daughter for her mother, it does happen. Can Jr. also describe them? I found on Reddit that women traditionally married at a young age, and therefore acquired new surnames, meaning that they did not need the Jr. suffix to distinguish them from their mothers.
