Bakulaw could not have meant Ape

It is more likely that bakulaw refers to the orangutan, which they may have encountered in South East Asia, since ancient Filipinos were sea-farers. It is also unlikely that it means "ape", a generic word for tail-less hominids, since that level of abstraction is not yet present in old Tagalog plus they haven't seen that many species of apes to have a generic word for it. In fact, the oranguatan is probably the only ape ever encountered by old Tagalog speakers. 110.54.161.210 09:11, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
