Orwell's reference to "Bonzo pictures"

edit

Orwell refers to "'Bonzo' pictures" 4 times in w:Burmese Days (1934), but the meaning isn't clear. E.g. "this godless civilisation founded on whisky, Blackwood's and the 'Bonzo' pictures!" Being Burma, it's possible that it does refer to Buddhist monks, but it's curious that they were so significant for colonialism, in Orwell's mind.

I've googled, but found nothing relevant. --Chriswaterguy 18:47, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
