Circenses (Circus, Games, or Races?)

Is the correct translation of circenses considered to be circuses? I have heard it cited as both games and races multiple times before, most notably in Towsen's "Clowns" (not sure of page #), where he claims the translation to "circuses" is incorrect as it more directly translates to races (circenses referring to circles as that was where the equestrian shows were performed).
