bur (Danisch, Ethymology)

edit

The Danish word bur ist related to the German word Bauer (Cage for a bird). The Duden (Volume 5) sais under Bauer²: To the phrase shown below bauen (=to build) belonged also words like bur (old German for Bird cage), bur² (old German for House, Chamber, Cell), English bower, swedish bur (Cage, Brig). Also some names of towns like Benediktbeuren, Blaubeuren, Buren, Wesselburen bear still this name.

To lern the danish word bur one can help oneself with German "Vogelbauer" or English "bower". Rasmusklump (talk) 17:00, 8 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Icelandic

edit

According to these articles, Icelandic "bur" doesn't currently mean "son", but "child", without any gendered connotations. [1], [2] Wakuran (talk) 16:49, 4 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
