Talk:civilize

Return to "civilize" page.

Google says:

  • Civilize = 39,200 hits
  • Civilise = 9,920 hits

Conclusions?

As with other "-ise"/"-ize" words, the "-ize" spelling is the only one usually used in the US, the "-ise" spelling is the only one usually used in Australia, and "-ise" is more common than "-ize" in Britain (but "-ize" is preferred by the Oxford University Press, Fowler, and the OED). There is a small number of words where "z" is never possible (e.g. "revise", because the "ise" has a different etymology). Otherwise, my preference is for "-ize". Amatlexico 28 Nov 2003 19:14 UTC

Then I believe the move is justified... (especially because Wikipedia spells civilisation as civilization)

I have also made a corresponding move in civilization.
