I believe the usage example by Mantel is a historical novelist misusing the word; the sense seems to be it was hard to understand because of noise, which I don't think fits the definition here or any other dictionary. See Johnson's dictionary on the Locke quotation, he uses it to illustrate a slightly different sense which I've never seen another example of. HastyBeekeeper (talk) 15:27, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
