False friend?

The usage note for Spanish has it that "[c]orresponder is a false friend, and does not mean 'to correspond via letters'". The phrase for that in Spanish is escribirse con." However, the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy suggests otherwise. Is this usage in fact so obscure, or at least uncommon, that its characterization as a "false friend" is justified?
