Etymology

edit

In support of the etymology of this word I should like to submit the following citation from Notes and Queries, vol. IV, no.108, digitized by Project Gutenberg:

In Bailey's Scottish Dictionary, and in Skinner's Etymologicon, it is traced to the Anglo-Saxon ear-wicga, i.e. ear-beetle.
