The Etymologies are contradictory.

According to https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com, the adverb firm is used only in two idioms: hold firm (to something) and stand fast/firm. However, Witkionary doesn't add etymologies in idiomatic expressions at all. --Backinstadiums (talk) 15:39, 22 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
