New England
editHaving lived my whole life in New England I've never heard this as a common noun. There are plenty of streets called High St in our towns, but I've always understood this to be meant literally, for a street that's on a hill. Even if it really does come from the colonial use as a market street, there is nearly always a larger street called Main Street, and only main street can be used as a common noun. —Soap— 12:28, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
