New sense for social media influencers

edit

Shouldn't the English sense be separated to two? the definition is very generic, whereas influencer now has picked a more specified second meaning due to social media. --Emascandam (talk) 23:22, 24 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

I agree, we should cover that meaning. The NY Times quotation mentions "internet-famous people who have more than a million social media followers". But maybe you are an influencer in the social media sense as soon as you're able to change consumption/lifestyle preferences of your audience? It often comes down to buying things, but increasingly also not-buying (eco influencer?), or political choices. – Jberkel 08:11, 25 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Mmm I actually don't see the word in my daily life that much so I couldn't tell how people use it, but at least for me it is just a specific type of account that posts about specific things and have a substantial amount of followers in the online platforms they are active in. Some of the types of accounts that I consider to be influencers are: activitst; maybe politicians with strong social media presence, people who post about their daily lives; People who specialise in something like making videos who became popular via the interent, so for example I would also consider Instagram and Tiktok users who post videos, whether scripted and montaged or otherwise, with substantial amount of followers, as influencers. Hope that helps :( --Emascandam (talk) 05:02, 26 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
