Etymology

Gamilaraay for sheep is thimba (/t̪imba/ /t_dimba/), so I would guess jumbuck comes from a cognate in a related language. Perhaps Wiradhuri, which also gave us billabong, another borrowing used in Waltzing Matilda. --Ptcamn 3 July 2005 09:37 (UTC)

Latest news: Ridley (1856) writes thimba as jimba. Possibly a dialect, rather than a seperate language, where dentals become palatals before /i/? And the presence of the -k is still unexplained. --Ptcamn 14:08, 24 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
