The note "possibly originally in a military context, as of one going beserk" was deleted with the note "why should that be the case?". Well: because the literal meaning is "nothing for me, nothing for you" and the meaning still today is "without considering own disadvantages". "Mir nichts, dir nichts" seems to mean: "All right, I'm going down, but so will you."
