What is the etymology here? It should not be difficult to find (from a particular sport?). Article move the yardsticks already has one. --Mortense (talk) 21:00, 9 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

There are several sports that have goalposts, eg, US football, Canadian football, rugby, Irish football. See w:Goal (sport). Rugby and US football seem to best candidates for the sport from which the expression is derived. Research into citations from English and US newspapers would be necessary and can be done at the Google News archive. DCDuring TALK 04:02, 10 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
