Thanks for bringing this up, because I've noticed it too. It's obviously much, much older than the current fad of using Z as a symbol of Russian nationalism. My theory was that the term is spelled this way in English for shock value alone, since it reminds us of Nazism. There is no /z/ in the Russian form of the name, even in the abbreviated form. However, it's possible that the word *Natsbol simply doesnt flow well in the English language. A possible minor influence is Nazgul, though I'd hesitate to even advance that as a serious theory, and it would again be only for shock value and therefore imply that the Nazi connection is what's intended.
