etymology

most of the discussion is on Wikipedia right now. Im mostly posting here as a convenience so people know that it's been talked about over there already just about as much as it could be here. There may be as many as fifteen different theories in the scholarly literature .... though fifteen authors doesnt necessarily mean fifteen theories, since presumably at least some of them agree. —Soap— 20:27, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
