Some sources suggest it comes from pulling the pin on a hand grenade. Others that it refers to separating railroad cars by pulling the pin locking the cars together. If it could be traced back to first used dates, it may make it clearer which is more likely. E.g. if railroad couplings pre-dated pin-secured hand grenades.
