Talk:schmaltz
The German word "Schmalz" translates as "lard" and "schmaltz" in the figurative sense. If the figurative derivation of "schmaltz" does not exist in Yiddish, or did not at the time the term was first used in English, then it seems very likely that the term was adopted from German, not Yiddish.
Doublet
editWhy does it say that this is a doublet of smalt, smalto and email (uncommon sense) but not "smelt", "enamel" and related common English words? They all seem to have the same roots in Proto-Germanic *smeltaną (“to melt”) (or more locally in from Frankish *smalt)?
Also, is there a way to point the link to the intended sense of "email" since right now it goes to the common sense (which is just "electronic mail")? --Rxtreme (talk) 17:13, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
