sliva (fruit, tree)

edit

The etymology of all-Slavic name "sliva" (plum, plum tree) may be related to Latin silva ("forest"). Wild plums grew in many areas of Europe, including the areas occupied by old Slavs (Slavene) who called the wild plum trees, and their fruit "sliva". In the country now occupied by Italy, wild "sliva" trees also grew and the name "silva" was adopted in Latin generally to denominate "the forest". All-Slavic word "sliva" in this context is more specific whereas the word "silva" is the less specific and applicable to (all trees in) the "forest". 84.47.87.169 20:05, 16 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
