Usage edit
This template may be used in "References" and "Further reading" sections and on talk pages to format quotations from Edward Henry Knight's work Knight's American Mechanical Dictionary (1877, 3 volumes). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books:
- Volume I (A–GAS; pages 1–944; archived at the Internet Archive).
- Volume II (GAS–REA; pages 945–1888; archived at the Internet Archive).
- Volume III (REA–ZYM; pages 1887–2831; archived at the Internet Archive).
Parameters edit
The template takes the following parameters:
|volume=– the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from|volume=Ito|volume=III. This parameter may be omitted if the page number is specified.|1=,|chapter=, or|entry=–- If quoting from the preface, specify
|chapter=Preface. - Otherwise, specify the entry or headword in the work to be quoted from. If this parameter is omitted, the template uses the name of the Wiktionary entry. By default, the template capitalizes the first letter of the value assigned to the parameter. To turn off the default formatting for the purpose of specifying a different formatting using wikitext markup and templates, specify
|noformat=1or|noformat=yes. To insert a prime character (′) into the entry, a double quotation mark (") can be used.
- If quoting from the preface, specify
|2=or|page=, or|pages=– mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:- Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this:
|pages=10–11or|pages=iii–iv. - You must also use
|pageref=to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

- This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the volume number (I–III) quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work. If the page number is not specified, the template tries to determine the volume number based on the first letter of the entry but is unable to do so if it begins with a "G" or an "R", in which case the volume number must be specified using
|volume=.
|column=or|columns=– the column number(s) to be quoted from in Arabic numerals, either|column=1or|column=2. When referring to a passage that spans both columns, either omit this parameter or use an en dash like this:|columns=1–2.|3=,|text=, or|passage=– a passage quoted from the work.|nodot=– by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use|nodot=1or|nodot=yes.
