Usage edit

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote from a collection of Jane Austen's letters entitled Letters of Jane Austen (1st edition, 1884, 2 volume) edited by Edward Knatchbull-Hugessen, 1st Baron Brabourne. It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |author= – if quoting from:
  • |1= or |volume=mandatory in some cases: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, either |volume=I or |volume=II. This parameter may be omitted if the letter number is specified.
  • |2= or |letter= – if quoting from one of the letters, the letter number in uppercase Roman numerals.
  • |chapter= – if quoting from a part of the work other than one of the letters, the name of the chapter.
  • |3= or |date= – if quoting from one of the letters, the date of the letter in one of the following formats: |date=9 January 1796 or |date=January 9, 1796.
  • |4= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=x–xi.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.
  • |5=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
