This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.

Usage

edit

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from the first English translation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's work Записки из подполья (Notes from Underground, 1864) by Charles James Hogarth entitled Letters from the Underworld (1937 reprint); the 1st edition (London: J[oseph] M[alaby] Dent & Sons; New York, N.Y.: E[dward] P[ayson] Dutton & Co., 1913; →OCLC) is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

The work also includes Dostoevsky's short story Кроткая (A Gentle Creature, 1876) translated here as The Gentle Maiden, and the novella Хозяйка (The Landlady, 1847; also the first English translation).

Novella or short story First page number
Letters from the Underworld page 1
The Gentle Maiden page 151
The Landlady page 209

Parameters

edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= and |chaptername= – "The Gentle Maiden" is subdivided into chapters. Use |chapter= to specify the chapter number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, and |chaptername= the name of the chapter.
  • |section= – if quoting from "Letters from the Underworld" or "The Landlady", the section number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals.
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page or range of pages quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=vii–viii.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the name of the title and the part of the work quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
