Usage

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Joseph Hall's work Meditations and Vowes, Divine and Morall (1st edition, 1st and 2nd books, 1605, 3rd century, 1606; and 1615 version). The template can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books and the Internet Archive:

• 1st edition:
  • 1st and 2nd books (1605).
  • 3rd century (1606).
• 1615 version as it appears in A Recollection of Such Treatises as Haue Bene heretofore Seuerally Published and are Nowe Reuised, Corrected, Augmented (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

1st edition (1605–1606)

• |century= – mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 3rd century (1606), specify |century=3. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st and 2nd books (1605).
• |chapter= – if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:

As the chapters marked with an asterisk (*) are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/bim_early-english-books-1475-1640_meditations-and-vowes-di_hall-joseph-bp_1605_0/page/n4/mode/1up, specify |page=4. • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.

1615 version

• |year= – if quoting from the 1615 version, specify |year=1615. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the 1st edition (1605–1606).
• |subchapter= or |subtitle= – the name of a subchapter or subtitle quoted from. If quoting from the epistle dedicatory addressed to Robert Drury, specify |subchapter=Robert Drury. As it is unpaginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=O-En_c5ORwEC&pg=PP7, specify |page=7.
• |para= or |paragraph= – the paragraph number quoted from in Arabic numerals.
• |1= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:

Both versions

• |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
