Usage

edit

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Nathaniel Lee's work Mithridates King of Pontus, a Tragedy (1st edition, 1678). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at Google Books (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters

edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – use this parameter to quote from the following parts of the work other than the play, as indicated in the first column of the following table:
Parameter value Result
Epilogue Epilogue (by John Dryden)
Dedication To the Right Honourable Charles, Earl of Dorset & Middlesex, One of the Gentlemen of His Majesties Bed-chamber, &c.
Prologue Prologue
As the epistle dedicatory is unpaginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=jvFoAAAAcAAJ&pg=PP9, specify |page=9. (The other chapters are also unpaginated, but the template is able to determine the URLs.)
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the act number (I–V) quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |act=mandatory in some cases: in most cases, the template can determine the act number quoted from if the page number is specified. However, if page 27, 47, or 64 is quoted from, this parameter must be used to specify the act number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=II.
Act I
pages 1–16
Act II
pages 17–27
Act III
pages 27–47
Act IV
pages 47–64
Act V
pages 64–77
  • |scene=mandatory in some cases: in most cases, the template can determine the scene number quoted from if the page number is specified. However, if page 29, 47, or 66 is quoted from, this parameter must be used to specify the scene number quoted from in lowercase Roman numerals, like this: |scene=i.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
