Usage

edit

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Cotton Mather's work Cœlestinus. A Conversation in Heaven, Quickened and Assisted, with Discoveries of Things in the Heavenly World. (1st edition, 1723). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters

edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give this parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result First page number
Agathangelus Agathangelus; or, The Servant of God with His Guardian page 1
Attestation An Attestation (by Increase Mather; September 4, 1722 [Julian calendar]) page i
Dedication To My Most Honoured Friend, Mr. Thomas Hollis, Merchant, in London page i
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=i–ii.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine, in the main part of the work, the essay number (1st–7th) quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.

The pagination starts from page i in the dedication and the attestation; and from page 1 in "Agathangelus" and "Cœlestinus" (the main part of the work).

  • |essay= – in most cases, if quoting from "Cœlestinus" if the page number is specified the template can determine the essay number. If it is unable to do so, use this parameter to specify the essay number in Arabic numerals, like this: |essay=1.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
