Usage edit

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Joseph Moxon's work Mechanick Exercises, or The Doctrine of Handy-Works (1678–1683). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, either |volume=I or |volume=II.
  • |chapter= – if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Volume I
Advertisement Advertisement
Preface Preface
Turning Explanation An Explanation of Terms Used in These Exercises of Turning, Alphabetically Digested
Volume II
Dedication To the Right Reverend Father in God, John Lord Bishop of Oxford, and Dean of Christ-Church; and to the Right Honourable Sir Leoline Jenkins Knight, and Principal Secretary of State; and to the Right Honourable Sir Joseph Williamson Knight; and One of His Majesties Most Honourable Privy-Council
As the above chapters are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/mechanickexercis00moxo/page/n6/mode/1up, specify |page=6.
  • |subchapter= – the name of the subchapter quoted from.
  • |section= – if a chapter is divided into sections, the section number quoted from in Arabic numerals followed by the name of the section in parentheses: see the example below.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.

In volume I, note the following:

  • Page numbers 17–20 are repeated. If referring to the second set of numbers, specify them as |page=17A to |page=20A.
  • Page numbers 25–28, 115–118, 174 and 234 are not used; the text is unaffected.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
