Usage

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Richard Steele's work The Englishman (1st series, collected edition, 1714; and 2nd series, 1st edition, 11 July – 21 November 1715 [Julian calendar]). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

• 1st series (6 October 1713 – 15 February 1714; published 1714).
• 2nd series (11 July – 21 November 1715).

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

1st series (1713–1714)

• |chapter= –
  • If quoting from the dedication in the collected edition (1714), specify |chapter=Dedication.
  • If quoting from the main part of the work and an issue of the work is subdivided into chapters, use this parameter to specify the name of a chapter.
• |3= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=ii–iii.
  • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

2nd series (1715)

• |3= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: as the issues are unpaginated, specify the first or front page of an issue as |page=1 and the second or back page as |page=2.
  • If quoting from both pages, separate the page numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=1–2.
  • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears). For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/sim_englishman-being-the-sequel-of-the-guardian_1715-07-11-1715-11-21_1-38/page/n1/mode/1up, specify |pageref=2.

This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.

• |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) quoted from, either |column=1 or |column=2. If quoting from both columns, either omit this parameter or separate the column numbers with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.

Both series

• |1= or |issue= – mandatory: the issue number quoted from in Arabic numerals. The issue number restarts from I in the 2nd series. In the 1st series the number will be displayed in Arabic numerals, and in the 2nd series in Roman numerals, according to the work.
• |2= or |date= – mandatory: the date of the issue quoted from in the format 6 October 1713 or October 6, 1713. The date will be converted from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar.
• |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
• |footer= – a comment about the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
