Usage edit

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote from a collection of John Tillotson's works entitled The Works of the Most Reverend Dr. John Tillotson, Late Lord Archbishop of Canterbury (8th edition, 1720); the 1st edition is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at Google Books (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Epistle Dedicatory To the Worshipful the Masters of the Bench, and the Rest of the Members of the Honourable Society of Lincolns-Inn
Preface The Preface
As the above chapters are unpaginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=oQMiAQAAMAAJ&pg=PP11, specify |page=11.
  • |1= or |sermon= – if quoting from one of the sermons, specify the sermon number in uppercase Roman numerals, from |sermon=I to |sermon=LIV.

The Rule of Faith
[Specify the page] The Rule of Faith. Or, An Answer to the Treatise of Mr. I[ohn] S[ergeant] Entitled, Sure-Footing, &c. page 559
  • |subchapter= – the name of a subchapter quoted from.
  • |date=, or (|month= and) |year= – if the date of the sermon quoted from is not determined by the template, use |date= to specify it in the format 21 July 1681 or July 21, 1681. The date will be converted from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. If only the month and year, or year alone, of the sermon is known, use |month= and/or |year= to specify this information.
  • |section=, and |para= or |paragraph= – if quoting from "The Rule of Faith", use |section= to indicate the section number in uppercase Roman numerals, and |para= or |paragraph= the paragraph number in Arabic numerals.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine, in "The Rule of Faith", the part number (I–IV) quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
