Template:descendant-family

This template page is experimental.
The details of its operation have not yet been fully decided upon. Do not deploy widely until the template page is finished.

This template generates an unlinked family name and a colon, which is useful for grouping languages together in Descendants sections when a proto-form cannot be provided. It is implemented using the descendant_family function in Module:etymology/templates/descendant.

{{descendant}} with the proto-language of the family should be used instead if a proto-form exists. This template can be used in cases where the existence of a proto-form is not likely.

Parameters edit

|1= (required)
The family code (see Wiktionary:Families) for the family comprising the languages of the descendant term(s).
|bor=1
Adds an arrow (→) before the family name with the tooltip "borrowed". (This is to indicate that the term was borrowed.)
|lbor=1
Adds an arrow (→) before the family name with the tooltip "learned borrowing", to indicate that the term is a learned borrowing.
|slb=1
Adds an arrow (→) before the family name with the tooltip "semi-learned borrowing", to indicate that the term is a semi-learned borrowing. (A semi-learned borrowing is a borrowing that happened early enough that significant sound change has since affected the term, particularly in reference to borrowing from an ancestor of the same language, e.g. a French or Spanish borrowing from Latin.)
|clq=1
Adds an arrow (→) before the family name with the tooltip "calque", to indicate that the term is a calque.
|pclq=1
Adds an arrow (→) before the family name with the tooltip "partial calque", to indicate that the term is a partial calque.
|sml=1
Adds an arrow (→) before the family name with the tooltip "semantic loan", to indicate that the term is a semantic loan.
|translit=1
Adds an arrow (→) before the family name with the tooltip "transliteration", to indicate that the term is a transliteration.
|der=1
Adds a double arrow (⇒) before the family name with the tooltip "reshaped by analogy or addition of morphemes". Use this when all descendant terms derive by the addition of a morpheme (affix) or by analogical leveling, rather than by regular sound change. This can be used in conjunction with one of the above single-arrow parameters.
|unc=1
Adds a sign to mark the provenance of all descendant terms as uncertain.
|t=
A gloss or short translation of the descendant terms. Can be used when a semantic shift is common to all descendants.
|qq=
Adds an arbitrary qualifier after the family name.
