Usage

Use this template in the etymology section of a term with a derivation from an uncertain Chinese language. When the specific language is known (Mandarin, Cantonese, Min Nan, etc.) please use {{der}}, {{bor}} or other derivation templates with the relevant language code.

Parameters

• The template requires at least one parameter, the Sinitic word to be linked to. The word is automatically wrapped up in Hani language/script tags to implement an appropriate font and size for Han script. For this reason, pinyin should not be used. There are also five optional parameters:

  2: the gloss (brief explanation) for 1

  3: a second Sinitic term to be linked to

  4: the gloss for 3

  5: a third Sinitic term to be linked to

  6: the gloss for 5

• The template is also used for the etymologies of non-Sino-Vietnamese words of Chinese origin. These are words that some Sinologists agree derive from Chinese through speech (rather than through writing like Sino-Vietnamese), even though they are often thought of by Vietnamese speakers as native. This is coded through one of three parameters, with any given value:

  hv: non-specified non-Sino-Vietnamese item

  nat: nativized non-Sino-Vietnamese item, borrowed after Sino-Vietnamese was well established

  preMC: non-Sino-Vietnamese item borrowed, borrowed before Sino-Vietnamese was well established

  If one of the above parameters are used, 2 becomes the optional parameter for the gloss of the original Chinese item, and 3 becomes the corresponding Sino-Vietnamese reading.
