Ullie
English
editProper noun
editUllie
- Synonym of Helmsdale (the river)
- 1946 March and April, “The Why and The Wherefore: L.M.S.R. Wick Main Line”, in Railway Magazine, page 130:
- The Inverness to Wick line of the late Highland Railway, now L.M.S.R, was diverted inland from Helmsdale up the valley of the Ullie, as, although this entailed a wide circuit, the route offered a considerably easier course from the engineering and gradient point of view than attempting to continue round the coast via Lybster.
Usage notes
editThe river valley is also known as Strath Ullie, instead of the more common Strath of Kildonan.
