Etymology edit

: (eyes) + - (nose) + ) (smiling mouth). First used with the intended purpose of expressing emotion in a post by Scott Fahlman to the Carnegie Mellon University computer science general bulletin board on 19 September 1982[1]

  • Where it would otherwise precede a right parenthesis ), sometimes the two are combined so that only one right parenthesis is used:[2]
