Etymology edit

First attested as in den vlist in 1259. The toponym is derived from the river name, which is potentially derived in turn from Middle Dutch vlies (layer of intertwined vegetation growing on top of a swamp) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t or, alternatively, from Proto-Germanic *flu-. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
