Pronunciation

edit

Kildin Sami pronunciation should be given using the template {{sjd-IPA}}. This template generates phonemic IPA of Kildin Sami terms.

In Kildin Sami, the main stress typically falls on the first syllable of the word; however, if the term is borrowed, the stress may remain the same as in the source language. This typically happens to loanwords from Russian having three or more syllables. In this case, {{IPA|sjd|}} should be used instead, with the transcription being entered manually for each such word (see алфавиһт (alfaviht) as an example).

Orthography

edit

Wiktionary prioritizes the modified version of the spelling used in the 1985 dictionary (ed. by Rimma Kuruč):

  • ⟨һ⟩ for /h/
  • ⟨ҋ⟩ for /j̥/ for the sake of consistency in reflecting voiceless sonorants along with ⟨ӆ⟩ for /l̥/, ⟨ӎ⟩ for /m̥/, and ⟨ӊ⟩ for /n̥/
  • ⟨оа̄⟩ for /ɒː/ in order to distinguish between /ɒ/ and /ɒː/

Other orthographical variants should be tagged by {{alternative spelling of|sjd|}} and given in the main entry under the header Alternative forms.

Dialects

edit

Kildin Sámi settlements and dialects:
K-7, K-8 – the Ār’sjōgk dialect
K-1, K-3 – the Kīllt dialect
K-4 – the Kårdegk dialect
K-5 – the Lujāvv’r dialect

Today, most likely only four of Kildin Sami dialects are still maintained:

  • Ār’sjōgk (А̄рьсъёгк) or Semiostrovsk, formerly spoken in the settlements of Varzino and Semiostrov'je;
  • Kīllt (Кӣллт) or Čuʒ’jāvv’r (Чудзья̄ввьр), formerly spoken in the settlements of Kildin and Čudz'javr;
  • Kårdegk (Коардэгк), formerly spoken in the settlement of Voron'je;
  • Lujāvv’r (Луя̄ввьр), spoken in the settlement of Lovozero.
