Creating Malayalam entries edit

Entry name edit

Titles of Malayalam entries should always be in Malayalam script, not a transliteration in English (that is, a romanization). e.g., Use "ചെറുനാരങ്ങ" as entry name, not "ceṟunāraṅṅ" or "cherunaranga"

The name of the entry is that of the word or phrase that you are defining.

See Appendix:Unicode/Malayalam for Malayalam letters

The basics edit

  1. Language header - The start of any Malayalam entry needs to start off with a header that explains that the entry is a Malayalam entry. The header should look like this: ==Malayalam==
  2. Part of speech header - After the language header, add a space and then add the part of speech header, which tells what part of speech the entry is describing. The header should look like this: ===<insert part of speech here>===
  3. 'The headword line - The headword line is the line directly underneath the part of speech header. In the headword line, depending upon which part of speech the entry is using should be a template that looks like this: {{head|ml|adj|tr=<insert transliteration here>}} or {{ml-noun|tr=<insert transliteration here>}}.
  4. Definition or translation - Two lines below the headword line is where the definition or English translation of the Malayalam word you are writing an entry for goes. Most entries will follow the translation scheme of entries, however, not all of them will. This is where you write what the Malayalam word means in English.
  5. Labels:Insert {{lb|ml|<insert label here>}}to add label to a definision. {{tlb|ml|<insert label here>}} for term label

An example edit

The following is an example:

==Malayalam==

===Noun===
{{ml-noun}}

# [[]]

The entry for the Malayalam word ശാസ്ത്രം (śāstraṁ) has the following markup code.

==Malayalam==

===Noun===
{{ml-noun}}

# [[science]]

A more in-depth example edit

This includes more information than the simple example above, including:

  1. Etymology,
  2. pronunciation,
  3. antonyms and related terms.

There are other possible headers for use. See WT:ELE for more information regarding these.

Preferred order of headers edit

The part of speech section will often include simple translation(s) into English in place of definitions, but there may be subsections.

Following is the preferred sequence for these standard sections:

===(Part of Speech)===
====Declension==== (for nouns, adjectives and pronouns)
====Conjugation==== (for verbs)
====Usage notes====

Etymology edit

To enter etymologies, use {{der|ml|<langcode>|<term>}}, which langcode being the ISO code of the language. Other etymology templates are {{bor}}, {{inh}}, and {{cog}}; see their respective documentations. Use {{rfe|ml}} to mark and request other people to fill it.

Transliteration edit

Malayalam transliteration should be followed using the guide at Wiktionary:Malayalam transliteration. Scientific transliteration is preferred.

Malayalam translations of English words edit

Malayalam words will appear in the Translations sections of English words. In general, only the lemma form of the Malayalam translation should be given.

The template {{t}} should be used, it speeds up entry and will enable any later, global changes in format to be made.

Maintenance edit

Pronunciations edit

  • See w:Malayalam#Phonology and w:Help:IPA/Malayalam
  • ന can represent both dental nasal /n̪/ or alveolar nasal /n/ depending on the word. Alveolar nasal (archaic ഩ) occurs in words like പന, മാനം, ഇനം, etc., while dental nasal sound occurs for words like നന്ദി, നാല്. Letter ൻ represents vowel-less alveolar nasal consonant.
  • റ represents voiced alveolar trill /r/ when alone, and voiceless alveolar plosive /ta/ (archaic ഺ) when occurring as റ്റ and ന്റ (ന്‌റ)
  • (chandrakkala) is used either to (1) suppress inherent vowel, (2) to conjoin two letters, and (3) as "samvruthokaram"(ു് ) or half-u at the end of a word
  • Use {{rfp|ml}} to mark and request other people to add the pronunciation.
