Sudovian is an extinct Baltic language.

This page aims to define the details of the layout of Sudovian word entries on English Wiktionary. It is a part of the broader policy of Wiktionary language considerations and is intended to complement Criteria for inclusion and Entry layout policies. Besides the latter policy, the layout of Sudovian language entries is based on the practical principles already in use on Wiktionary as the standard form.

Orthography edit

Headwords should provide the exact original written form, using special characters such as "ſ" as necessary.

For words from the "Pagan dialects from Narew" manuscript, we use "s" instead of "ſ" and "ʃ" in page titles. This is because "ſ" is just considered an orthographic variant of "s", and it has no special significance, while "ʃ" represents the "sh" sound, which is probably not what was intended by "ſ" in the Polish manuscript. The digraph "sz" would have been used instead for this sound -- and we do find it used in miſzta.

We retain "ż" because it represents a different sound from "z". We also retain "ł" although an argument could be made to remove it.

Lemmas edit

In cases where the form we would normally want for a lemma (e.g., nominative singular for nouns) is not attested, we promote the form that is attested to lemma status, picking one arbitrarily if there are multiple options.

Sources edit

All words should provide information about the original source, probably either the "Pagan dialects from Narew" manuscript (using {{RQ:xsv:Narew}}) or Hieronymus Meletius, since those are the two most significant primary sources on Sudovian.

Words that were constructed by neo-Sudovian revivalists are considered off-topic. Lithuanian Wiktionary provides some words that are obvious neologisms, so watch out for that. "Virdainas" (suduva.com) tries to reconstruct Sudovian based on various sources (not providing any specific info on methodology), but on Wiktionary we stick to attested vocabulary.

That said, reconstructed words, for example based on toponyms, can still be included under "Reconstruction:Sudovian/word". It would be good to cite an academic source in such an entry if one exists, or at least to provide the toponyms that are the basis for the reconstruction.
