Wysong
English
editEtymology
editAn anglicisation of the German Weissang surname. Though a surface analysis might suggest the meaning "wise song", the German surname is actually an alteration—due to influence from German Sang (“song”)—of a derivative of Middle High German wīssage (“soothsayer”). The Middle High German word was inherited from Old High German wīzzago (“soothsayer, seer”), which in turn was inherited from Proto-West Germanic *wītagō (“wise one; prophet”).
Ultimately of the same origin as the English word wiseacre, and cognate with German Weissager.
